TIL poverty in USA stopped decreasing as soon as socialist policies called "Great Society" were enacted under the "War On Poverty" legislation by Democrat President Lyndon B Johnson

[21 November 2018] While poverty in US decreased from ~35% in late 40s to ~18% in 1964, the enactment of LBJ's hare brained wealth transfer and "urban redevelopment" schemes that simply transferred wealth from taxpayers to the BPL individuals. It created no wealth, no jobs, no incentives, a big fat nothing. Poverty touched its low of 11% circa 1973, and since then has been bouncing in the 11-15% range with US govt pouring out more and more every year, every new Democrat president's term.

A lot of what I found in LBJ's policies had a distinct taste of Communism. I'm no Marxist scholar, but one thing common to all Communist regimes is a set of meaningless activities that don't have any definite outcome, are mostly just things to keep people busy, maybe at no expense (like the 4 Pest campaign of Mao) or at huge costs to government (NREGA's ditch digging.)

LBJ too implemented a similar high cost activity: Model Cities Program. Huge amounts were spent on creating new city blocks based on whatever was hip in "urban planning" back then, moving poor people out of deteriorating neighbourhoods and into these new urban housings. Decaying cities like Detroit and Oakland were selected along with hicktowns in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma and Tennessee.

It was like redecorating your living room when your kitchen is on fire.

Since none of the Program's activities generated steady employment, attracted investment or business, helped education, or anything productive like that, eventually the new neighbourhoods too fell into disrepair and now are shitshows like the old neighbourhoods. So now instead of 1 poor neighbourhood, you have 1 old derelict abandoned neighbourhood + 1 new poor neighbourhood.

Socialism is cancer, ya'll. It ruined all Communist countries, it ruined India, and it even ruins America when it raises its ugly head there.
